The tragedy that occurred in Newtown is simply unimaginable. What would compel a young man to kill so many strangers, so many innocent children? I certainly don’t know, and the authorities are still trying to understand what the killer’s motivation was.
Back in September, it appeared that one congressman after another decided to show his ignorance, and my Advice to Republican Congressmen: Shut Up was the only thing I could really offer in return. Actually, a good 5th grade biology class was also a good recommendation.
Now, after this incomprehensible act of violence, Mike Huckabee spoke up with the ignorant suggestion that, ‘the crime was no surprise because we have “systematically removed God” from public schools.’ The shooter was not a student there, he was home schooled. If we take Mr. Huckabee’s remark to be exactly true, then it would follow that…… what? If the Ten Commandments were posted on the walls, this insane killer would have seen them, and turned away? That God Himself would have intervened?
We need to analyze what the shooter’s issues were, how to help people who are this sick, how to keep guns out of the hands of such people, etc, but where do Huckabee’s remarks fit in? How does this ignorant proclamation do anything to move us in a positive direction? Do politicians feel compelled to blurt out the first thing that comes to mind, no matter how disconnected from reality those remarks may be? Mr Huckabee, please, for Pete’s sake, just shut up. Sir.
The data for this chart came from Fox News, so you know it’s absolutely accurate. A truly random even would show no bias, no correlation between party and education. Judge for yourself.
(You can click on the image to see it full size.) A kind statistics major will tell me the odds of this being the result of a random event. Short of that, the numbers don’t lie.
That’s all she wrote. Time to shut down.
